The Girl in the Yellow Dress

Part 3: The Healing

The next few weeks were hard.

Lily had nightmares. She would wake up screaming, convinced that her mother was coming back. She wouldn’t let me out of her sight. She clung to the twins like they were her lifeline.

The twins, for their part, were amazing. They included her in everything. They played with her. They read to her. They held her hand when she was scared.

They didn’t see a stranger. They saw a sister.

Daniel started therapy. He also started the process of getting custody. It was complicated—there were legal hurdles, paperwork, court dates. But he didn’t give up.

He was determined to be the father Lily deserved.

Six months later, Daniel was awarded full custody.

Lily’s mother had disappeared. She had left the country. She had signed away her rights.

She didn’t want to be a mother.

She never had.

But Lily didn’t care. She had a father. She had siblings. She had a grandmother.

She had a family.

It’s been two years now.

Lily is seven. She’s in second grade. She’s learning to read. She’s learning to trust. She’s learning to be a child.

She still has nightmares sometimes. She still flinches when someone moves too fast. But it’s better. It’s so much better.

She calls me Grandma. She calls Daniel Dad. She calls the twins her brother and sister.

And every night, before bed, she asks me the same question.

“Grandma, am I safe?”

I kiss her forehead.

“Yes, baby. You’re safe.”

She smiles.

And she falls asleep.
