Part 3: The Healing
Three weeks later, I received a letter from Jessica.
It was handwritten. Six pages. Front and back.
She apologized for everything. For giving Ryan the keys without asking. For letting him treat me like an intruder. For not standing up for me when I needed her.
She told me she had left Ryan.
Not because of what happened at the lake house. Because of what happened after. Because he blamed her for everything. Because he screamed at her in front of their children. Because he told her she was worthless, just like her sister.
She told me she was staying with a friend. That she was getting therapy. That she was finally starting to see how much she had let him control her.
And she told me she understood if I never wanted to speak to her again.
I read the letter three times.
Then I called her.
She answered on the first ring.
“Emily?”
“I got your letter.”
“I’m so sorry.”
“I know.”
“Can you ever forgive me?”
I closed my eyes.
“I don’t know. But I’m willing to try.”
She started to cry.
“Thank you. Thank you so much.”
It’s been a year now.
Jessica is doing better. She has her own apartment. She has a job. She has custody of her kids.
She comes to the lake house sometimes. Not to stay. Just to visit. To sit on the deck and watch the sunset. To talk.
We’re rebuilding. Slowly. Carefully.
We don’t talk about Ryan. We don’t talk about that weekend. We talk about the future. About healing. About what we want our relationship to look like.
It’s not easy. It’s not perfect.
But it’s real.
And that’s enough.
I still own the lake house.
I still go there when I need peace. When I need silence. When I need to remember who I am.
I fixed the window. I repaired the floor. I replaced the towels.
The house is mine again.
But more importantly, I am mine again.
I spent eleven years letting my family believe I was someone I wasn’t. I spent eleven years hiding my strength, my rank, my accomplishments.
I won’t do that anymore.
I am Colonel Emily Carter.
I am a leader.
I am a warrior.
And I am not someone to be pushed around.
Not by Ryan.
Not by anyone.
The End
