The Wedding Footage

Part 3: The Healing

It’s been a year now.

Michael has tried to contact us. Letters. Phone calls. Emails. He even showed up at the house once.

We didn’t answer.

Cassandra filed for divorce six months after the wedding. She claimed Michael was abusive. She claimed he had anger issues. She claimed she was the victim.

We didn’t respond.

Ellen has been in therapy. She’s learning to heal. She’s learning to trust again. She’s learning that what happened wasn’t her fault.

I’ve been in therapy too. Learning to let go of the anger. Learning to forgive myself for not seeing the signs sooner.

We’re doing okay.

We’re not perfect. We’re not whole. But we’re together.

And that’s enough.

Last month, we received a letter from Michael.

It was handwritten. Three pages. Front and back.

He apologized for everything. For the wedding. For the lies. For the years of manipulation.

He told us he had been in therapy. That he had been diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder. That he was learning to take responsibility for his actions.

He told us he didn’t expect forgiveness. He just wanted us to know he was trying.

I read the letter to Ellen.

She cried.

Then she said something I didn’t expect.

“I forgive him.”

I looked at her.

“You do?”

“I do. Not because he deserves it. Because I need to let go of the anger. It’s been eating me alive.”

I took her hand.

“You’re stronger than I am.”

She smiled.

“No. I’m just tired of carrying it.”

I don’t know if we’ll ever see Michael again.

I don’t know if he’ll ever truly change.

But I know one thing.

I made the right decision.

I stood by my wife when she needed me most.

I showed her that she mattered.

I showed her that she was loved.

And that’s what marriage is.

That’s what family is.

That’s what love is.
