The ER

Part 3: The Healing

It’s been a year now.

Our daughter, Lily, is fifteen months old. She’s healthy. She’s happy. She’s the light of my life.

Ethan and I are still together. But it’s different now. We’re partners. Equals. He carries half the load. He changes diapers. He handles the night feedings. He takes her to the park so I can sleep.

He’s not the man he was in that ER. He’s better. He’s present. He’s trying.

Sylvia came back into our lives six months ago. She apologized. Not to me. To Ethan. She told him she was wrong to pull him away. She told him she was wrong to blame me. She told him she wanted to be part of Lily’s life.

He told her she had to apologize to me first.

She did.

It wasn’t a perfect apology. It was stiff. Forced. But it was real.

I accepted it.

Not because I forgave her. Because I was tired of carrying the anger. Because I wanted Lily to know her grandmother. Because I wanted to move forward.

Last weekend, we had a family dinner.

Sylvia sat at the table across from me. She held Lily on her lap. She fed her mashed peas. She sang her a song.

She didn’t scream at me. She didn’t blame me. She didn’t tell me I was the mother and I needed to figure it out.

She just sat there. Quiet. Present. Trying.

I watched her and thought about that night in the ER.

The screaming. The coat. The words.

And I thought about what I did next.

I didn’t fight. I didn’t cry. I didn’t beg.

I stood up. I walked to the desk. I took control.

And that changed everything.
